CLEAN WATER PROJECTS

TÂN HƯNG CLEAN WATER LINE
(VESAF Clean Water Project No. 01)
Hamlet 2, Tân Hưng Commune, Cái Bè District, Tiền Giang Province

Specifications:  Underground system; HDPE D63 pipe (Ströman Vietnam Plastic Co.): length = 3,000 m , diameter = 63 mm, thickness = 3.8 mm

Logistic and technical support: Câu Lạc Bộ Nhịp Cầu Hữu Nghị (Bridge-to-Friendship Club), Công Ty Cấp Nước Cái Bè (Clean Water Supply Company of Cai Be), and local volunteers

A few years ago, the decade-old water pipe bringing clean water from Cai Be Water Supply Company’s (CBWSC) distribution station to Tan Hung commune (about 10km away) was worn out and cracked at many places.  The local people had no resources to repair the old system on their own, and, because of inadequate funding, the water supplier had no incentive to upgrade the distribution line to this remote commune.  As a result, over 60 families in Hamlet 2, a tightly knit community in Tan Hung, had to buy fresh water in 20-liter containers for drinking and cooking and depended on a small and often stagnant local river to provide water for other daily needs such as cleaning and bathing. As such, these families continually used unsanitary water for many years.

The new VESAF-financed water line moves clean water from a large holding tank of CBWSC over a distance of 3,000 m to Tan Hung commune, delivering fresh water to all households in this underserved hamlet.

(VESAF Clean Water Project No. 02)

Specifications:  120 m-deep well, high-capacity pumping and filtration system, capacity: 25 cubic meters of filtered water per day
Financial support:  VESAF (90%) and People of An Lac Thon (10%)
Logistic and technical support: Nhóm Ái Hữu Công Chánh Sàigòn (AHCC-Saigon, Fellow Retired Civil Engineers - Saigon) , Công Ty Khoan Giếng Nước TNHH (Water Well Drilling Company TNHH), and local workers

For the inhabitants of An Lac Thon, a remote, underserved town of 40 households and a grade school, finding a reliable source of clean water has been very difficult in recent years.  Each day, approximately 300 adults and 470 children use contaminated water from nearby canals and creeks for their daily needs.  Although they were aware of the quality of their water, they did not have resources to improve their water supply.  To help them change this situation, VESAF agreed to financially support the building of a new water well for the community.

The present system, which includes a 120 m-deep well and a high-capacity pumping and filtration system, provides clean water for students at An Lac Thon 2 Grade School as well as neighboring households.

MICROFINANCE

Economists and other social scientists know how hard the climb out of poverty is for poor rural people in developing countries. The many obstacles include the need to support a family while starting or expanding a business, acquiring needed business knowledge, access to markets for one's goods and/or services, the support of other community members, and above all, finding the financial capital to invest in the needed tools and supplies. Microfinance programs, which supply needy entrepreneurs with small ($300-500) loans after organizing them into local support groups, overcome the last two of these obstacles. The loans are repaid to the lending organization, which then recycles the funds into new loans to other similar individuals and communities. Such microfinance programs multiply the benefits of the invested funds to the benefit of the borrowers and their neighbors.

Since 2017, in an extensive and expanding microfinance program, VESAF has partnered with Hearts For Hue (H4H), a Vietnamese nongovernmental organization based in Hue, to grant microloans to needy families in the region. H4H provides training to borrowers in financial literacy, savings techniques, and other necessary topics for financial management. By the end of 2020, H4H made 602 loan distributions to a total of 375 families in various hamlets and townships in Thua Thien Hue Province.  Many of these were made with repayment funds from previous recipients. And as more loans are repaid and additional families participate, we can expect this to lead to a continued expansion of the program and its benefits. The funds have been used in a variety of productive ways:  to expand supplies offered in rural retail stores and service establishments such as beauty parlors, and to buy and plant pomelo trees.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

VESAF has established several scholarship programs to provide financial assistance to high-performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds.  The Foundation strongly believes that education is a critical component for breaking the cycle of poverty.  We provide the means for gifted students to continue their schooling, by easing the immediate financial pressures and hardships on their families that might otherwise curtail their opportunity for a strong education.  Without this much-needed financial support, many of these students would have to drop out of school to work to assist their families financially.

VESAF partners with Hearts for Hue, a local charitable organization that works with school administrators to identify students in need of financial assistance.  These students all come from underprivileged families that are experiencing severe financial and/or medical hardships.  Each scholarship awardee has demonstrated outstanding scholastic potential and a desire to excel.

Thus far, VESAF has provided a total of 100 scholarships to university level students, 30 scholarships to high school level students, 40 scholarships to middle school, and 100 scholarships to primary school students.

A powerful typhoon hit central Vietnam in mid-October, causing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding. Numerous communities in Thua Thien Hue, the hardest-hit province, were submerged, affecting thousands of families, many of whom fled to rooftops to escape high floods while their belongings were washed away.

Many schools were severely inundated; all the students’ text books and school materials were badly damaged or destroyed. Unfortunately, facing this disaster, their parents could not afford to buy new school books and supplies for them. In partnership with Hearts for Hue, VESAF provided 500 underprivileged students with new text books and supplies at five primary schools in Huong Chu, Huong Toan, Quang Phuoc, Quang Thanh, and Quang Vinh communes, Thua Thien Hue province.

11/06/2020 - 11/18/2020: Representing VESAF, Hearts for Hue worked with school principals to distribute new school supplies to students at Hương Chữ 2, Huong Toàn 1, Quảng Phước 2, Quảng Thành 1, and Quảng Vinh 2 primary schools.
